MISSION TRIP REPORT
Batam (26 June 2010)

A team of 14 people from Grace Church and from Singapore Youth For Christ made a trip to Batam to visit the children in Shelter Home and also to conduct a children's program for Filadelfia's Joyful Ministry.

The work for the trip started in April with the book drive in Grace Church to collect appropriate books for the upcoming kindergarten that Fildelfia is going to build. In early May, a clothes drive for the children in Shelter Home was also held. Gracians gladly gave and also volunteered their help to sort, wrap and pack the books. Melissa from Grace Mandarin Service helped to sort and pack the clothes.

In all 9 bags of clothes and books were brought over to Batam on 26 June by a team of Gracians and volunteers from SYFC. The children were very happy to see us! Even before we could get out of the car, the children ran toward us to greet us. There was much joy! The children introduced themselves to us. There are 15 children in the Home now. The children sang some of the new songs that they have learnt and they were exhorted from the word of God from the parable of the Good Samaritan to love one another as the Lord commanded. We prayed for the children (see prayer items at the end of the report).

The team then proceeded to Filadelfia to conduct the children's programme for Joyful Ministry. This is Filadelfia's children ministry work when they gather the children every Saturday for a time of activity and bible teaching. The SYFC volunteers led the children in singing. Rebecca planned and conducted the ice breakers before the bible teaching time. The children had fun! The event of the Lord Jesus feeding the 5000 was told to the children by Wendy Leow (interpreted by Jeffrey, a volunteer from SYFC who is Indonesian). The children were taught to trust in the Lord who is mighty and also to follow the example of the Lord in His compassion towards others.
Following on is the craft time. Ley Hong came up with the idea of make faces on Styrofoam cups. The children were broken into groups and with a Singapore team member to assist the children in the group. The children were very keen to make their own faces and some of their creative products are seen in the picture below.

To top it all off, the SYFC volunteer led the children in some fun and games for half an hour before we bid good bye to the children.

Prayer items for Batam Ministry

  1. Shelter Home
    • Thank God for this ministry to the children. The Lord Himself sets the example in showing compassion to the helpless. Pray that God will grant Filadelfia the resources that they need to do this work.
    • Some of the children are due for primary school soon but a few of the children's entry into primary school will be delayed due to the lack of birth certificate. The alternative plan is to home school them in Shelter Home until their admission is approved (which could take up to a year to process according to Ang Liang). Do pray that the children will be able to adapt well to school and learn well. Pray that the home schooling plan will be worked out and in place soon.
  2. Filadelfia's children ministry
    • Pray that the children of church members and children from Shelter Home will have more interaction and better integration.
    • Pray for strength for Ang Liang and her team as they continue to reach out to the children.
  3. Follow up
    • Pray for a possible mission team this year end to either
      • Conduct English programme for the new kindergarten
      • Teach the Shelter Home children life skills such as personal hy giene with a small team staying with them for about a week
      • Plan and run a Christmas children out reach programme
