What
if I don't like the music that
everyone else listens to?
(Job's friend, Elihu is speaking:)
"For the ear trieth words, as the mouth tasteth meat. Let
us choose to us judgment: let us know among ourselves what is
good".
Job 34 : 3-4
You don't have to enjoy certain
music just because others do. It's like with food. What if everyone
else liked French fries, but fries made you sick to your stomach?
Would you eat French fries? You wouldn't have to. In the same
way, you will develop your own taste in music. It may be the same
as others, but it doesn't have to be.
You should respect others' tastes. Don't yell at them to "turn
off that stupid music" just because you don't like it. Pay
attention to the words, however. If you know they aren't pleasing
to God, let your friends know you have no interest in listening.
True friends will respect you for your honesty. And God will be
happy you wanted to please Him.
ACTIVITY
Do you like to listen to classical music? Rock? Traditional gospel?
Music, even Christian music, comes in all styles. If you want
to find music to fit your taste and honor God, go with your parents
to a Christian book & music store. You can probably listen
on headphones to find an artist you like who's OK with your parents.
Then buy the CD yourself, or put it on your birthday or Christmas
present list.
