What
is a parable?
"And with many such parables
spake He the word unto them, as they were to hear it".
Mark 4 : 33
A parable is a short story
with a surprise ending that makes a point. Jesus told many parables,
for 2 reasons: (1) to hide from people who weren't really interested,
and (2) to teach the truth to listeners who were interested and
wanted to learn. Whenever Jesus told parables, those who weren't
interested or who wouldn't listen didn't understand. But those
who wanted to learn asked Jesus to explain the story, and then
they got the point.
We can learn from the Bible if we want to do what God says. But
if we don't want to listen to God, the Bible won't make much sense.
ACTIVITY
Read one of the most famous parables, the Good Samaritan. It's
found in Luke 10: 30-35. Jesus used these verses to teach an important
lesson. Now rewrite the parable and set it in your town, today.
Who would the characters be? If you have friends or brothers and
sisters around, act out the story.
